Physicist to Share Information About World’s Largest Scientific Instrument

This article is over 13 years old.

BRANDON, MB — The Brandon University Physics Department along with the Canadian Association of Physicists present guest speaker Dr. Andreas Warburton, an Associate Professor from McGill University. He will be on hand to talk about “First Results from the Large Hadron Collider”.

The abstract for his talk is as follows:

“The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is the world’s biggest scientific instrument, consisting of a 27 km circular tunnel located under the Swiss-French border at the CERN laboratory near Geneva. Since March 30, 2010, the LHC has been operating at a record centre-of-mass energy of 7 trillion electron-Volts.

The talk will describe these exciting times in high energy experimental subatomic particle physics, with a discussion of the LHC machine performance, the complex experiments that are now recording collisions at increasing rates, and a selection of early important physics results now emerging at these new frontier energies.”

Dr. Warburton graduated from the University of Victoria with a BSc in 1991. He then went to the University of Toronto to do his graduate work using the Tevatron matter-antimatter collider on the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) experiment. After earning his PhD in 1998, he moved to Cornell University to join the CLEO experiment where he worked on studies of quark-flavour transitions in hadrons produced in electron-positron collisions. In 2003, he returned to Canada to work at McGill University, focusing on the next generation CDF-II experiment at Fermilab and the ATLAS experiment at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland.

This talk will be held at 3:30 p.m. tomorrow, Thursday, March 31, in Room 2-23, in the Brodie Science Building. Everyone is welcome to attend.
