BRANDON, MB — Brandon University’s Canada Research Chair in English and Creative Writing, Professor Di Brandt’s new poetry collection, Walking to Mojacar, with French and Spanish translations by Charles Leblanc and Ari Belathar (Turnstone 2010) has been shortlisted for both the McNally Robinson Manitoba Best Book of the Year Award and the Mary Scorer Award for Best Book by a Manitoba Publisher. The awards will be announced at a ceremony in Winnipeg on April 17.
Professor Brandt is the author of six poetry collections, including questions i asked my mother (1987), Agnes in the sky (1990), Jerusalem, beloved (1990), and Now You Care (2003). She has published numerous books of fiction, literary criticism, and creative non-fiction, and has edited several literary anthologies with Barbara Godard. Dr. Brandt has collaborated extensively with artists in other media, including Aganetha Dyck and composer Jana Skarecky.
Her numerous awards and recognitions include the McNally Robinson Manitoba Book of the Year (1990), the Canadian Authors Association National Poetry Prize (1995), the Gerald Lampert Award for “best first book of poetry in Canada” (1987), the Gabrielle Roy Prize for “best book of literary criticism in Canada” (with Barbara Godard), and the Foreword Gold Medal for Fiction (with Annie Jacobsen and Jane Finlay-Young). Her work has been twice short-listed for the Governor General’s Award for Poetry, as well as the Dillons Commonwealth Poetry Prize, the Trillium Ontario Book of the Year Award, the Pat Lowther Award (three times) and the Griffin Poetry Prize. Her critical anthology, Wider Boundaries of Daring: The Modernist Impulse in Canadian Women’s Poetry (with Barbara Godard) was recently shortlisted for the Canada Prize in the Humanities.
