BU’s 2010-2011 Aboriginal Writer-in-Residence Gives Reading

BRANDON, MB – This year’s writer-in-residence, Marilyn Dumont and others will give poetry readings on November 19. She will be joined by Professor Di Brandt — Brandon University’s Canada Research Chair in Literature and Creative Writing — Charles Leblanc, Delfy Martinez and Erica Ens. The works presented will be recited in either English, French, German, Plautdietsch and/or Spanish.

Of Cree and Métis heritage, Marilyn Dumont — a descendant of Gabriel Dumont — has won several awards for her work, which include the 2001 Writer’s Guild of Alberta Stephan G. Stephansson Award for Poetry and the 2007 McNally Robinson Aboriginal Book of the Year Award. She has taught creative writing in several Canadian post-secondary institutions.

The evening will also give Prof. Brandt the opportunity to launch her latest book entitled Walking to Mojácar, in which she continues her multi-language experiments. According to Ann Fisher-Wirth, the author of Carta Marina: “Walking to Mojácar makes us know how far we have gone toward catastrophe, and yet how much passion, imagination, intelligence, and therefore, perhaps hope remain. In a prose poem, Brandt asks, ‘Who knows what this new age will remember of us as it tells its tales and stories to its children?” May these poems be among them.’”

This literary evening will be hosted by Turnstone Press, the publisher of Walking to Mojácar as well as The Hawkweed Literary Forum, Brandon University, with the support of the Canada Council for the Arts, Manitoba Culture Heritage (Aboriginal Arts), and the Canada Research Chair Council.

The event will take place at 8 p.m., in the Louis Riel Room, in McMaster Hall, at Brandon University. Admission will be free as will be the refreshments. The public is welcome and there will be some of the authors’ books available for purchase.
