BRANDON, MB – On Saturday, May 29, Brandon University will hold its 2010 Spring Convocation with two ceremonies; one beginning at 10:00 a.m. and the other beginning at 2:30 p.m. It will be held at Brandon’s Keystone Centre. Approximately 700 graduands are expected to receive their degrees. In addition, this year’s ceremony will feature the conferral of Honorary Degrees upon Phil Fontaine and Stephen Lewis.
The morning ceremony will feature the conferral of degrees upon students graduating in the disciplines of Arts, Business Administration, Fine Arts, Rural Development, Science, Health Studies and First Nations and Aboriginal Counselling. The Valedictorian for the morning ceremony will be Ms Jill Norminton, baccalaureate in nursing.
During the morning ceremony, an Honorary Degree will be conferred upon Phil Fontaine, champion for facilitating change and advancement for First Nations people. He will receive a Doctor of Laws (honoris causa).
In addition, the morning ceremony will feature the announcement of the 2010 Senate Award for Excellence in Research recipient, Dr. Beverley Nicholson (Department of Anthropology), and the 2010 Board of Governors Award for Excellence in Community Service recipient, Ms Brandy Robertson.
The afternoon ceremony will feature the conferral of degrees upon students graduating in the disciplines of Music, General Studies and Education. Valedictorian for the afternoon ceremony will be Heather Findlay, a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education (After Degree) graduand.
During the afternoon ceremony, world renowned advocate and former U.N. Ambassador, Stephen Lewis will receive an honorary Doctor of Laws (honoris causa).
In addition, the afternoon ceremony will feature the introduction of Distinguished Teacher Award recipients Ms Lisa Bartley, Ms Stacey Hainstock, Mr. Howard Hole, Ms Karen Taylor and Ms Jane Ward.
