Calgary, AB – Brandon University’s SIFE team has been awarded third place at the 2010 Students In Free Enterprise National Champion by national charitable organization Advancing Canadian Entrepreneurship (ACE) and a 50 person judging panel comprised of top Canadian CEOs. SIFE Brandon was also awarded second place in Canada for the TD Canada Trust Entrepreneurship Challenge. Additionally, the power team won $1,500 for creating “Lasting Hunger Awareness” in their community in the Campbell’s Soup Let’s Can Hunger National Challenge.
The 2010 national competition took place between May 10 and 12 in Calgary and involved three gruelling rounds of competition, 43 university and college teams and 600 students, from every province of Canada.
The team from Brandon University, comprised of 24 members, operate 11 successful community outreach programs and volunteer thousands of volunteer hours. Their projects have created $447,700 in economic opportunity in Brandon and surrounding areas this year alone and have positively impacted 3,300 people in their community. Brandon University professor, David Taylor, SIFE Brandon’s devoted faculty advisor, accompanied the students and has been actively involved with the team since its formation in 2004.
SIFE Brandon President, Jonathan Fung, could not be more proud of his team stating that “It has been a dream of mine, since I first became involved with SIFE three years ago, to have the opportunity to present our projects on such a prestigious platform and present SIFE Brandon to the rest of our country. To be named the third place team in Canada and ranked among the finest academic institutions in Canada is an incredible accomplishment and honour. I am so incredibly proud of our SIFE team.”
The SIFE program, operated by ACE, provides university and college students access to real world experience, through the implementation of economic outreach projects that complement in-class studies. Students involved in ACE make a meaningful contribution to their communities today, and discover their potential to achieve an even greater impact as the leaders of tomorrow.
Close to 1,000 delegates including the country’s brightest university and college students, academic professionals and top Canadian CEOs took part in this annual gathering that effectively engages generations of leaders around the shared cause of building a better Canada. The National Champion team from Ryerson will now move on to the international level of competition – the SIFE World Cup – taking place in Los Angeles, California this October 10 to 12, 2010. There student teams from over 40 countries will compete for the ultimate title of World Cup Champion.
