BRANDON, MB – Brandon University’s Bachelor of Science in Psychiatric Nursing (BScPN) program was honoured with a special award Thursday evening in Winnipeg.

The College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Manitoba (CRPNM) bestowed upon the faculty, a Special 50 th Anniversary Award, as a thank you for the significant contribution made towards the profession in Manitoba.

“We’re honoured to be recognized. This program has been running at Brandon University now for 15 years and this award acknowledges the hard work by faculty in making this program a success,” says Dr. Dean Care, School of Health Studies Dean.

Dr. Noreen Ek, Chair of the Psychiatric Nursing Department, along with faculty and staff from the BU campus and the satellite campus located in Winnipeg were on hand to accept the award.

In 1995, the BScPN program started at BU, becoming the first such program in Canada. The faculty has persevered over the years and developed a program that enables students to graduate as competent beginning practitioners in the practice of their profession.

“Their commitment to professionalism; their dedication to Psychiatric Nursing; and their belief in excellence is evidenced through the continued evolution of the BScPN and the continued competence of the programs graduates. The Profession is ever grateful to them all,” says Leo O’Rourke, President of CRPNM.

Brandon University will continue to add to this commitment as BU has been given the go-ahead to establish a Masters of Psychiatric Nursing (MPN) program – another first of its kind in Canada. A target start date of January 2011 has been established for admission of the first students.
