BRANDON, MB – Dr. Janet Koprivnikar, from the BU Biology Department has been awarded NSERC (Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada) Discovery Grant. The grant is worth $100-thousand spread across five years.
Dr. Koprivnikar’s project is entitled, ” Parasitism in Aquatic Communities – Environmental Influences and Stressors.” She and her team of students will aim to understand the importance of and mechanisms behind pathogen involvement in worldwide amphibian declines as well as explore the broader effects on other freshwater animals.
“This grant demonstrates recognition and support for the active research programs being conducted at primarily undergraduate institutions such as Brandon University, as well as the importance of regional research,” says Koprivnikar. “My goal is to increase our understanding of how environmental factors affect host susceptibility and response to disease in aquatic environments, as well as the implications of these dynamics for freshwater communities.”
The Discovery Grants (DG) Program supports ongoing programs of research (with long-term goals) rather than a single short-term project or collection of projects. These grants recognize the creativity and innovation that are at the heart of all research advances, whether made individually or in teams. Researchers are free to work in the mode most appropriate for the research area.

NSERC, the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, is the primary Canadian federal agency investing in people, discovery, and innovation. The Council supports both basic research through research grants and project research through partnerships of universities with industry. NSERC also supports the advanced training of highly qualified people in both areas.
