BU to offer Bachelor of Indigenous Health & Human Services

BRANDON, MB – Brandon University’s Bachelor of First Nations and Aboriginal Counseling (FNAC) will be revising its name. The program will now be known as Bachelor of Indigenous Health and Human Services (IHHS).

  “This is a significant step forward for the program. The name change from First Nations and Aboriginal Counselling to Indigenous Health and Human Services better reflects the new location of the program within the School of Health Studies, and the curriculum revisions that were made,” says Dr. Dean Care, Dean School of Health Studies.

  The curriculum revisions include an increase in the number of courses offered in Western counselling theories and skills. However, it will still honour the original intent and vision of FNAC to train Aboriginal people as counsellors. Counselling will only make up one component of the training students will receive in the new IHHS Program.

  “Graduates of the program will be well situated to enter the workforce or move on to graduate school. We are excited about the IHHS Program and look forward to working with the School of Health Studies as we embark upon this journey together,” says Andrea Hinch-Bourns, Acting Director of FNAC.

  The IHHS Program is based within Indigenous knowledge and perspectives of health, healing and wellness. It will provide students an opportunity to explore the social, political, structural and cultural issues that impact Indigenous people, families and communities overall health and well being.

  The name change will come into effect for the 2010-11 academic year and students can already apply for the program.

  There are still 25 FNAC students that will complete their studies as planned. The final graduating class from FNAC is planned to happen in 2013.
