BRANDON, MB – After four years of planning and construction, Brandon University officially opened its brand new, spacious $3.9-million Physical Plant.
“This is a wonderful addition to BU that will assist in increased functionality across the entire campus,” said Dr. Deborah Poff, BU President and Vice-Chancellor. “This type of building is vital for the enhancement of facility management in the 21 st century University.”
The physical plant serves as the hub for many campus operations and provides services from security and technical support to building maintenance, project management, grounds keeping, deliveries and housekeeping.
“On behalf of the Manitoba government, I congratulate Brandon University on the completion of this essential capital project. The staff and students they serve will benefit from the modern and efficient facility, which is part of ongoing campus renewal,” said Advanced Education and Literacy Minister Diane McGifford.
The new building replaces the old physical plant building, which was originally a barracks from the Second World War.
“It’s a pleasure for my staff and me to come into a clean, fresh smelling building every day,” said Physical Plant Director, Bill Myers. “It’s now so bright and cheery. You can already tell morale is going up.”
Other features of the new Physical Plant building include:
- Motion & voice activated lighting system
- Heat recovery ventilation system
- Variable frequency drives on air handling unit motors
- Low maintenance concrete floors
- Card access on all doors
- Secure staff key storage
- Video link for deliver access
