BRANDON, MB – Paul Sanderson, from the Brandon University Bobcats men’s volleyball team, has been named the 2009-10 Player of the Year in the CIS.
Paul Sanderson was in Kamloops, BC, with Athletic Director Kirk De Fazio, Wednesday evening to receive this award at the CIS Men’s Volleyball banquet at Thompson Rivers University. Sanderson was named the Canada West MVP last, and then forwarded as a nominee with the MVP’s from the three other conferences (Ontario, Quebec and Atlantic regions) throughout the country for the honour.
Sanderson was also recognized as a CIS 1st team All-Canadian. This is his third All-Canadian award in his three years with the BU Bobcats.
“This is a wonderful award for Paul as he embarks on his professional volleyball career,” says BU Athletic Director, Kirk De Fazio. “This award also recognizes that the volleyball program here at BU led by Russ Paddock, who was the Coach of the Year in Canada West, can rival anyone in Canada on the competitive stage.”
Sanderson, who will graduate this spring with a Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education, led the entire nation in total points. He had 416.5 points in 2009-10, which was 60 points better than his nearest rival and shattered his own Canada West record of 395.5 set last season.
Sanderson and Paddock will be formally recognized for their achievements, in Brandon at the Bobcats Athletics annual year end banquet. The date for the banquet will be April 12 at 7 p.m. at the Canad Inn’s Roadhouse. For tickets call the BU Athletics office at 727-7375.
