BRANDON, MB – The 2009-2010 pro series’ second special presentation features hometown virtuoso, violinist James Ehnes. Born and raised in Brandon, the Juilliard graduate will give a recital on Thursday, February 11, at 8 p.m., in the Western Manitoba Centennial Auditorium.

The son of Alan Ehnes, associate professor of trumpet in the School of Music, and of Barbara Ehnes, the director of the Brandon School of Dance, James has forged an international career in classical music. With more than 20 recordings to his credit, he has performed extensively in Europe, Asia, Australia and North America. He is currently the Francis Chaplin Guest Professor of Violin at Brandon University and has given master classes to the School’s students in previous years.

At the age of 13, James made his orchestral solo debut with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, two years after winning the Grand Prize in Strings at the Canadian Music Competition. In 2005, he was the youngest person to receive an honorary doctorate from Brandon University, and in 2007, he was elected as a Fellow to the Royal Society of Canada, again the youngest individual to receive such an honour.

Joining the violinist for this recital will be pianist and the Dean of the BU School of Music, Dr. Michael Kim. They will play works by Franck, Ravel, Bach, Brahms and Tartini/Kreisler. Tickets for the concert are $20 and are available at the Western Manitoba Centennial Auditorium box office.

The pro series and the School of Music gratefully acknowledge the generous support of The Canada Council for the Arts, the Manitoba Arts Council and of the Province of Manitoba, through a Consolidated Arts Programming Grant from Culture, Heritage and Tourism.
