Students at BU rock out for HIV/AIDS campaign

Brandon, MB – Brandon University’s World University Service of Canada (WUSC) Club will be honoring World AIDS Day on Tuesday, December 1 with two events.

First, students at Brandon University will be holding an HIV/AIDS Vigil from 12:30-1:30 p.m. in Room 141 of the School of Health Studies. Stories of those living with HIV/AIDS and those who have lost their lives to the pandemic will be shared along with a First Nations smudging ceremony in honour of the cause.

Then Tuesday evening, The 40 along with WUSC will be host to Band-AIDS where six local bands will rock out for to help raise awareness and funds for WUSC’s Bike for AIDs campaign.

Tenderfield Road, 18 Rabbit, Take With Audio, Beauty and The Brutes, Jimmy Legs and The Funk, and Blacklite Buddha will hit the stage beginning at 8:00 p.m. Tickets for the event are $5 in advance and $8 at the door.

WUSC, a non-profit organization dedicated to human development and global understanding through education and training, holds a national Bike for AIDS campaign each year where bikes are purchased for health-care workers in Africa.

In Sub-Saharan Africa, 80% of the population lives in rural areas where roads are little more than footpaths and bicycles are the primary mode of transportation. By using a bicycle, a health care worker can see up to five times as many patients. The cost to purchase a bicycle is $200 and a complete ambulance is $380.
