OTTAWA, ON – Brandon University students were honoured this past weekend by World University Service of Canada (WUSC) for their work with student refugee sponsorship and international development.

WUSC is a non-profit organization dedicated to human development and global understanding through education and training. WUSC has local committees in more than 80 university and college campuses across Canada, along with development projects in 22 countries overseas.

WUSC’s Local Committee at Brandon University was recognized at the organization’s 63rd Annual General Assembly in Ottawa. Over 400 students, alumni and prestigious guests from across Canada attended. The Local Committee of the Year award recognizes Canadian students who have demonstrated a commitment to international development.

“It is truly an honor to be recognized nationally out of so many worthy local committees,” says local member, Brandy Robertson. “We worked really hard last year to create awareness for WUSC on campus and in the community and it paid off in a major way.”

Brandon students may be small in number, but there is no limit to their dedication and passion. Since the 1980s, the Brandon LC has been active in WUSC’s Student Refugee Program, helping a total of 29 student refugees escape harsh camp conditions to pursue post-secondary education at the university.

“The students we welcome are not simply WUSC sponsored students. They are active and contributing members to Brandon University and the City of Brandon. Most importantly, they have become our friends.”

Notable achievements throughout the year include a Bike for AIDS event, information days promoting fair trade products, and a text book drive where thousands of used books were shipped to schools in Africa.
