BRANDON, MB – The new $700,000 Micro Analytical Facility at Brandon University is up and running and has set its official opening for October 16 th, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. in the John R. Brodie Science Building. All are welcome to attend what will be a very important and valuable public-private partnership linking key researchers and innovators in industry and the University.
The Facility provides researchers access to advanced technologies and is already being used as a training and educational tool in Physics and Geology. Also, the Facility provides user training and support for both undergraduate students and industry participants and has been serving the public and private sectors since start up of operations this summer.
“It will allow us to train a generation of students in the skills needed in today’s technological society,” says Dr. Austin Gulliver, Dean of the Faculty of Science.
The Facility houses several state-of-the-art analytical instruments including a JEOL JSM-6390LV/GS Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) equipped with an Oxford Instruments INCA X-Act EDS X-Ray detector, as well as high quality analytical and imaging packages and related facilities.
“This powerful analytical tool is capable of providing high magnification, high resolution imaging as well as determining quantitative chemical analysis of materials. It has endless applications in many fields of science and technology including all branches of geosciences, forensic science, medical imaging, environmental, engineering, and materials science,” says Facility Lab Manager, Dr. Michelle Huminicki.”It is a welcome and powerful tool for mining and petroleum exploration industries. The Micro Analytical Facility also offers lapidary services for various types of sample preparation using newly purchased cutting, grinding, and polishing equipment, fluid inclusion microanalysis, cathodoluminescence and other services.”
The Faculty of Science would like to thank Western Economic Diversification Canada which has contributed $338,500 towards the Facility as well as the generous contribution from Brandon University. Rockcliff Resources Inc, VMS Ventures Inc, and Harvest Gold Corp also made corporate donations to help launch this Facility.
