BRANDON, MB – August is a jam-packed month of Bobcat Sports at the BU Gymnasium. BU Athletics has a full line-up of camps available for kids going into grades 4 through 12, including the new “Iron Kids” Conditioning Camp. The camps run through the entire month of August and are coached by Bobcat student-athletes, coaches and staff. Campers will get the opportunity to learn new skills in a fun and competitive environment.
The camps run on the following dates:
• Bobcat Volleyball Camp (co-ed) – August 3-7, daytime
• Girl’s Basketball Camp – August 10-14, daytime, overnight available
• Iron Kids Camp (co-ed) – August 16-20, evenings
• Multi-Sport Camp (co-ed) – August 17-21, daytime
• Boy’s Basketball Camp – August 24-28, daytime, overnight available
• Elite Volleyball Night School (co-ed) – August 28-30, weekend
The newest addition to the Bobcat camps is the “Iron Kids” Conditioning Camp. The camp was developed by Athletic Director Kirk DeFazio who felt there was a need to bridge the gap between summer vacation and scholastic athletic competition. He says that “by presenting scientific tools and investing in our youth through programs like the Iron Kids, we can better prepare our Brandon athletes for competition.”
“Our camp is focused on engaging the athletes in both offensive and defensive skills training. We use individual and group drills while our Bobcat athletes work with and inspire the campers.” says Head Coach Jaime Hickson of the August 10-14 Girl’s Basketball Camp. “We have many athletes come in from out of town and live in residence for the week, which gives them plenty of opportunity to get to know my athletes on a more personal level. I think the girls really like that.”
Men’s Basketball Head Coach Keith Vassell says the Boy’s Basketball Camp is designed to “develop essential fundamental skills and conditioning while having fun in the process.”
The Bobcat Volleyball Camp is a kid favorite that involves a full day of fun volleyball activities that focus on developing individual and team skills. Men’s Volleyball Coach Russ Paddock says that “the Bobcat Volleyball camp is a great way for children to develop the skills to play the game. Bobcat players, who will serve as coaches during the camps, are knowledgeable and experienced. They will provide an enjoyable and challenging experience for players.”
The Elite Volleyball Night School returns late in August to prepare local athletes for their season of competitive volleyball. Women’s Volleyball Coach Lee Carter says, “The Elite Volleyball Night School is designed for those individuals, both male and female, who have aspirations of pursuing a volleyball career at a post-secondary level. We will educate athletes on the different levels of post-secondary play available, and will also give them strategies they can use to get noticed and recruited.”
Finally, for the younger kids in grades 4-8, there is the Co-ed Multi-Sport Camp. Coach Hickson says, “We felt there was a need for the Co-ed Multi-sport Camp. It gives athletes an opportunity to participate in both basketball and volleyball in a full-day camp format. They can have the best of both worlds or choose a half-day camp in their sport of preference.”
Registrations are being accepted throughout July and August for the camps. For more information about the Bobcat Sports camps please visit our website at www.gobobcats.ca, or contact BU Athletics at bobcats@brandonu.ca or call (204) 727-7375.
